Speier Statement on SCOTUS Overturning Abortion Rights

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), co-chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus (DWC), issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision Friday to eliminate the constitutional right to an abortion.

"Today's Supreme Court decision is about ensuring women will never be equal. The Supreme Court has become an extreme weapon of the far right. This is also just the beginning of a long-plotted war by the far right on civil rights for women, people of color, and LGBTQI+ people, as indicated by Chief Justice Thomas' opinion. This opinion is government mandated pregnancy. The Court does not trust a woman to make this deeply personal decision for herself," Rep. Speier said. "For my constituents and fellow Californians who think we are safe from the extremists that have taken over SCOTUS, think again. Republicans want a national ban on abortion. Yesterday's ruling on New York's gun laws show that state's rights mean nothing to this weaponized and politicized court if it stands in the way of their agenda to drag us back to a time when women were chattel and property. We must make our voices heard this November like our lives and the lives of our daughters and granddaughters depend on it. Because they do!"
